Introduction/2011 Review part 1

Welcome one and all to an antidote to the stale, lifeless, auto-tuned crap that commercial music has turned into of late. I intend to comb the internet finding the freshest (and weirdest) underground sounds, review them and link to them for your information and pleasure.

To start with I thought I'd review and link to some of my favourite music from 2011.

So without further ado...

One of my favourite releases of the year was by the excellent producer Beytah, who makes Dubstep, Chiptune, Breakcore and all kinds of lovely Noise music. The release was his epic Phobos Monolith on Digital Vomit Records, a great free netlabel who specialise in Noise based music from Drone to Breakcore and everything in between.
The album is a glorious mess of chiptune noises sequenced and produced on the now-legendary Gameboy production suite LSDJ. The sound is raw and abrasive, heavy Glitch. The tracks range from downtempo hip-hop type ones like album opener, Cydonia to more Dubstep type tracks like the storming Reptilians, which I mix regularly with Dubstep in live sets. As it is my personal highlight I will share it here.

Another favourite this year has been the Dubstep producer known as Scythe. His particular take on Dubstep is deep and distorted with a hearty nod towards Science Fiction and B-Movies, with his use of vocal samples and even song titles. His recent EP released on Betamorph Recordings was called Invaded Sector and is full of Sci-Fi referencing song titles like the title track, We've Made Contact, Vyral Attack and Secondary Guidance Systems. The later of these tunes, Secondary Guidance Systems, is my personal highlight and he was kind enough to send me an mp3 copy of it prior to it's release for my sets. As my highlight here it is:

Glitchy Dubstep producer Alecek also mangaed to grab my attention last year with his awesome tune Robocs. It's really well made Glitch reminiscent of Autechre but wielded to a solid Dubstep beat and basslines. It's also very melodic with nice lead synths and strangely manipulated vocal samples. Anyway don't take my word for it give it a listen:
